Meet our Crew
Born in the vibrant city of Medellin, Colombia, Hazel’s life took a tropical twist when his family moved to the serene coastal town of Capurgana. With the Caribbean waves lapping at his doorstep, Hazel’s love for the ocean grew as he freedived, spearfished, and hung out with local fishermen like it was his job—which, eventually, it became!
Hazel dabbled in statistics at university, but when life threw a curveball, he returned to his seaside roots, ready to chart a new course—this time on the ocean itself. Local day charters became his launchpad, and after saving every penny he made, he jumped aboard a passing sailboat, leaving Colombia behind for Panama and the wide, wide world.
Panama offered Hazel his first taste of professional yachting, from boatyard grunt work to deckhand and chef duties. Soon enough, he earned his 200T Captain’s license in Panama—right before COVID hit. When the world paused, Hazel didn’t: instead, he joined Sea Shepherd, where he protected marine life, did scientific research, and learned to fix anything that needed fixing on a boat.
After three action-packed years of eco-adventures, Hazel returned to the Caribbean, diving into the charter world and fine-tuning his skills as a captain. And then, destiny called—he met Chef Yah Yah. The two bonded over their meticulous nature and passion for hard work. Soon, they were not only crewmates but travel buddies, visiting 12 countries in pursuit of their Yacht Master and Dive Master certifications. Now, they’re a dynamic duo on the high seas, living their ocean dream!
Hailing from a self-sustaining farm in the breathtaking Cape Town region of South Africa, Chef Yah Yah didn’t just learn how to cook—she was practically born with a wooden spoon in her hand! Under the watchful eye of her nanny, Yah Yah mastered the kitchen, making everything from cheese to preserves, pickles to baked goods. By age six, she was selling her creations at the local farmers market like a pro.
With a family farm bordering the ocean, Yah Yah’s culinary passions expanded beyond the kitchen. Days were spent foraging for seafood along the coast and cooking her fresh catch over a beachside fire—a true farm-to-table experience! Her natural talent and love for crafting meals from scratch make her a force in the kitchen, while her adventurous spirit matches the thrill of life on the water.
From her humble beginnings to traveling the world with Captain Hazel, Yah Yah is always up for a challenge. Together, they’ve set sail on new horizons, ready to welcome guests aboard with mouthwatering dishes and unforgettable stories. Whether it’s a perfectly seared catch of the day or homemade pastries, Chef Yah Yah ensures every meal is an adventure of its own!

Thank you for joining our family and putting such love and thoughtfulness into every meal, drink, place setting, love — and most of all that natural loving energy that comes from you both.
We know we are an “interesting bunch”. Thanks for accepting that and going with it. Especially Michael — he will miss the bed ferries, food, sails, beautiful views.

Hazel and YaYa were fantastic. Hazel's skippering ability, combined with the boats equipment, let us do more things than I have done previously. He also accompanied us on land tours (the Baths) and gave us a personal tour. YaYa is a great chef/host. Her cooking is amazing – the best I've ever had on a charter like this. Her passion and talent for cooking really came through. Hazel and YaYa were equally good making drinks. They have a lot of energy and really interacted with my family. We had a lot of fun with them!

Absolutely incredible experience aboard Scuba Doo, the Lagoon 50 catamaran in the British Virgin Islands! From the moment we stepped on board, Hazel and Ya Ya made us feel like we were on top of the world. Their hospitality was unmatched, and they truly went above and beyond to make sure our trip was perfect. Ya Ya’s cooking was out of this world – every meal was a culinary masterpiece, and I was blown away by the variety and freshness of the dishes.
The activities were incredible as well! Scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters was an absolute highlight – I got to explore vibrant coral reefs and swim alongside octopus, sea turtles and exotic fish. Snorkeling was equally amazing, with abundant marine life just waiting to be discovered. For the more adventurous, wakeboarding in the calm, turquoise lagoons was so much fun – and the crew made sure everyone was safe and had a blast. I got up on my first try after Hazel’s great lesson.
The whole trip was a dream come true. If you’re looking for an unforgettable vacation in paradise with a crew that feels like family, I can’t recommend this experience enough. It’s 5 stars all the way!

I just spent an amazing week aboard Scuba Doo 50 in the BVI! We did a lot of fabulous diving, snorkeling, excursions, wakeboarding and other water activities but what really made the experience special was the hospitality and the food by the crew. Somehow, in between preparing restaurant quality meals, snacks and excellent drinks with love and care, leading water excursions, cleaning up after us and keeping the boat and all the water toys well maintained, the crew, Chef Yah Yah and Captain Hazel, also managed to make us feel like family. The environment they created, their ability to always make sure we were comfortable and having the best time and the knowledge they have of the BVI, marine life and the boat absolutely enhanced the whole experience!
I highly recommend a trip on Scuba Doo 50!!

We have been to the BVI twice prior and chartered a similar boat. Our experience on Scuba Doo was first class and exceeded our expectations. The crew, Ya Ya and Hazel were phenomenal. They went out of their way every day to accommodate our requests and make an amazing experience for our kids. From tubing, diving, E-foiling, snorkeling and beach excursions every day was unique and memorable. Scuba Doo is very spacious and well laid out. We spent most of our down time relaxing up front or up top. The boat has everything you need and high end appointments. The Wifi worked excellent the entire trip and was easy to check work emails if needed. The food and attention to detail was fabulous. Hands down the best cuisine we have experienced on a BVI charter. Our kids who can be picky loved every meal and wished their mother could cook like Ya Ya. We were sad to leave but will always remember this trip and look forward to returning on a boat crewed by Hazel and Ya Ya.

Talk about living the dream! A few weeks ago, I had the absolute pleasure of spending a week aboard Scuba Doo 50. Since I had never chartered a boat before, I had no idea what to expect. But let me tell you – this experience exceeded every expectation! The crew, Yah Yah and Hazel, made the week beyond special. They were warm, welcoming, accommodating, and incredibly service-oriented. Yah Yah’s cooking? Absolute perfection! Every meal was delicious and tailored to our tastes. Hazel’s captain skills? Smooth sailing! He handled everything with confidence and ease, making us feel completely at home. The yacht itself? Stunning, spotless, and packed with every luxury imaginable. You won’t find a better crew or a more incredible experience. All I can say is, don’t just dream about it, go do it!

A very special experience for a multitude of different reasons. The freedom to explore all of the BVIs, making it feel like an inclusive experience complete with your own Michelin star worthy chef YahYah. This trip would have been wildly different without them leading the way.

I have to say they make work look like fun and made our charter feel like we are their friends .
Each meal was delicious and presented like being in a fancy fancy restaurant.
